How To Feed Raw Dog Food

In December Sev and Lily switched to raw dog food, now eating Poppy's Picnic and totally loving it!
Thinking about raw a lot, it was more the practical side of things that stopped us for so long, rather than the diet it self. Raw dog food really is best, and Severus and Lily are thriving on eating it.

We wanted to share tips on how we feed raw, with Poppy's Picnic and why we love it....
How To Feed Raw Dog Food

Picking a complete raw dog food with the right ingredients for a dogs balanced diet, is really important. It's the reason for picking Poppy's Picnic as nothing else has to be fed, and I know Sev and Lily are getting everything they need.

Be Organised
Having a very small freezer was the main reason we thought raw wouldn't work for us [and there's no room for another] but it's been great. Fitting in two weeks worth of Sev and Lily's food, and having a rolling subscription to order more before it runs out. Picking up our food also helps with delivery costs, as Poppy's use one of the local butchers.

Remembering to defrost the food 24 hours before feeding is one that takes it's time to become routine, but it soon does. Getting into the rhythm of it will become just like feeding them....and Sev and Lily never let us forget that.
Don't worry though, we all forget sometimes, just pop the whole pack in a bowl of warm water to help it defrost.

Be Hygienic
One of the negative points that comes up with raw feeding is about the hygienic element, Personally I have managed to handle and cook my own raw food without having any problems, so simply using the same steps when handling and dealing with raw dog food with leave you with no problems.

Feed the Right Amount
Just like dry kibble, being sure to feed your dog the right amount is important. Poppy's Picnic have an easy guide to help with the daily amount as well as the costings of it. Easy to understand and know what you're doing from the start.

What Else to Feed
Sticking to natural treats, such as all fish or meat treats are perfect to go along side this diet. As a rule that can be easier said than done but we always try to pick grain free treats and the chews we off Sev and Lily are natural ones like pork roll or pizzles. Remember bones are great for dogs too, but they much always been uncooked.

The Benefits Will Show
There are many benefits from feeding raw dog food, from healthier looking coat and skin, cleaner teeth, pick up-able poo, improved digestion, many also see less behavioural problems that may be the because of hyperactivity that kibble is can cause.

It's Not "Gross"
Sam was the main person in the household that was worried about feeding raw dog food, but only because of having to handle the raw meat.
With Poppy's there is very little odour and the texture of the meat isn't off putting, so there has been no issues with it being too gross for us to deal with.
